It's not rocket science but it is difficult. I dunno, I probably just have a different view on this than you, but if I were the one trying to create that manga or that anime, I'd put as much effort into making that main character likable, strong, stable, and as far away from the norms as possible. It may not seem hard to you, but I think it would be at least for me. STILL FUN, still a thrill, but still work. New characters is always work. There's too many cliches to steer clear of.

Again, you may be right, and I may be terribly wrong. Someone could have/probably will whip out something glorious and it'll be the easiest thing they've ever done. I just don't think so, and not for me.
