35. It is a hobby. Yes. So is knitting or drawing or playing guitar. But I don't want to be knitting scarves forever--I want to learn how to make a sweater, and maybe even one day, a friggen cool Mod pea-coat. I definately want to improve my drawing. And while I know for a fact that I have all the musical inclination of a tree stump, I still want to move from beyond playing the same five songs to playing some fun Irish reels or enough songs to have a good jam with my friends, or maybe even complete strangers in the pub.

It doesn't make sense to do something as a "hobby" and not want to improve. What's the point in repeatedly sucking over and over again?

Yeah, when I do fanfic, I do it for me. Eventually, on one in particular, it helped that I had a lot of nice folk commenting and encouraging my fic, but essencially, I write a story because I want to read it, and I want it to be there.
That's no excuse for writing poorly. And I don't just mean having occassional bouts of bad grammer, because this comment is technically fraught with that. It literally confuses me when people write badly. And I don't just mean coherency-wise, I mean that when I see:

'sokka will never approve of our love zuko. Katara said crying hard zuko put his arms around her and whisper i know my love but i love your more than the moon and the stars and the sun and i will be willing to wait for the day when your brother can accept me because your are my soulmate.'*

Well, a part of my head explodes because I want to know whose brain works like that. How can you function in an English speaking country and write like that, even for fun. How is it that your brain does not have the little checks in it that say "Period goes there to stop the sentence. Comma to indicate a pause. Probably should capitalize that. New paragraph."? If you ever read anything at all, you should know it, and apply it as such. It shouldn't even be a conscious effort, it should just happen. The big, glaringly awful stuff.

And as for bad dialogue, that hurts to. How can anyone not write dialoge? I don't mean dialoge with the snap and zing of say, Joss Whedon or Stephen Moffat, but if you speak to other human beings, then you should know how other human being communicate with each other. You shouldn't have clunky, horribly awkward lines that no one would ever say because you should know better simply by interacting, by conversing, or even just by watching TV.

*pant pant pant*

And OP, keep in mind, when I say "you" it's a general "you." I don't mean you in particular, because I have no idea what you write like. I just kind of got started and didn't really stop. I think I'm okay and better and all now. Phew.

*Fic cracked out of my own brain. I don't hate myself enough to look up badfic right now.

41. I'm dreadfully guilty of that one, but I don't care. The longest fic I ever did was when I took a mutant terrorist from X-men and had him sit for three days in a normal girl's flat recouping. Yeah, a bit of Sueing went on, I'm sure, but largely, I just wanted to see what Mort was about when he wasn't killing people and being generally naughty. If you've got bizarre or seemingly evil characters, odds are, I want to watch them eat their breakfast more than fight some huge battle.

Makes writing difficult, when you know they should have some sort of physical conflict. But eh, it's fun.
