So far we've only heard the story - two versions of the story - from him, who is a known liar and thus an unreliable narrator.

He might have been psychologically abused by his brother, but hey, maybe they were just a nest of psychopaths to begin with - all of them.

Not saying he had a choice in the abuse, if it indeed happened, but he certainly did have a choice in killing, and what he did to Fitz & Simmons.

Most abuse victims do not become cold-blooded killers. That IS a choice. The past can explain your behavior, but not necessarily excuse it.
