Yeah, my childhood was ruined the moment I got a internet connection.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
In a sort of it never happened to me sense or in a I don't get why people are so upset sense?

It goes both ways for me.

For instance..."Ash was just imagining Pokemon he was in a coma ooooh!" is irritating because it's boring, uncreative, and a cheap copout, but people overdramatic reactions to it when they can simply ignore it and go rewatch Season 11 is annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate coma theories because you can really apply it to any character.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. And they also tend to have headlines that really pop, which makes them major fodder for clickbaity pop-culture websites, and therefore awful.

Hence boring and uncreative. The best alternative i've read was that Ed, Edd, and Eddy took place in Purgatory.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Or it was all just a dream. Bleh.

I feel the same way about that dumb theory that Harry Potter was actually a normal boy who was institutionalized or whatever and imagining hogwarts was his way of coping with a shitty life. Christ, that's the dullest thing I've ever heard.

I guess I should've known this theory was a thing. But I didn't :/

Asylum AUs sounded like a cool idea when I was, like, fourteen. It's so weird that some people never grow out of them.

I wonder if that came from a semi-popular fic I read? Apparently there was backlash after a similar Buffy episode aired, even though the fic was written ages earlier.

Those kinds of fan theories annoy the hell out of me. The Rugrats one (that all of the babies are actually dead or were never actually born and are all really just figments of Angelica's imagination) particularly pisses me off. It all just smacks of "making up grimdark explanations behind anything light and happy makes me smart, edgy, and cool, right?"

For me, it's shown up in two forms:

"Oh god now I can't stop thinking about how twisted this is in new adult viewpoint context". Now there's certainly dirty thoughts, but it's beyond that, like lets take pokemon... Every creature on the food chain seems have human intelligence. Every. Single. One. EVEN SOME OF THE PLANTS. Think for a second how fucked up that is even if you take the prize fighting out of the equation.

And the more conventional "Oh god, this...Without nostalgia glasses... this is so ... I don't remember being so brutally oblivious as a kid..." this one can be a bit subjective, but it's there

great examples (for me): Space Jam*, Rocket Power

*even if it gave us one of the great songs that go with anything, rewatching it, obvious cashgrab movie was obvious.

That song though: ANYTHING

rewatching Space Jam as an adult with a group of friends is hysterical. A friend who had never seen it just didn't understand the appeal it held for all of us. Right after we watched Space Jam, we watched Kazam, which was Shaquille O'Neal's movie and it's pretty bad too.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get it either. I think I'm pretty good at separating fanfic, people's headcanons, etc. from the actual thing. If I see some porn of something I don't like to think about in that way, it might squick me out a bit, but it won't change how I see the original thing. It's not that thing, it's something someone else created.

I think this is why I don't have a problem shipping multiple pairings with the same characters, and don't get people who get really mad about ships they don't like. None of them are "real" so who cares?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I can disassociate things/people from the canon material, so no matter what might have happened in fandom, I can still enjoy the source material.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it makes me a bad person but I think "ruining childhoods" in fandom is ~hilarious~!

If I worked in children's animation and had a connection to the internet I would so have a drinking problem.

I don't tend to experience this either really, even when I see porn of something I liked as a kid, it might make me pause sure but it will never ruin it. But I suppose I just find it easy to dis-associate stuff like that.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Me either, OP.

According to fandom, I was ruining my own childhood when I was a child. Sooooo.. I guess I'm biased?

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-10-18 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Your secret is unreadable and you should feel bad.

joking

(Anonymous) 2014-10-19 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
If you have ever liked Muppet Babies and still want to understand the concept of a ruined childhood, please read the first few parts of Homestuck. There's a Saw / Muppet Babies crossover in there that has to be seen to be believed.

If that doesn't affect you, OP, you are probably immune for life.

This secret hurt my eyes. Like, literally. All the clashing colors and scribbly text.
