Those kinds of crossovers are awesome, though. If people don't get it, that's their problem. Keep posting it until they find it funny, the same way you take people who don't like chocolate-dipped bacon and just keep feeding it to them until they like it.

ehhh that's an unfortunate way to extend the parallel, seeing as posting crossovers on tumblr is in no way analogous to feeding someone something they don't like.

But in a way, I agree - there's no point in worrying about it. Either people like your crossover or they don't; in the latter case you'll find yourself in a fandom of one, which, depending on your attitude towards such things, may be either bad or a-okay.

And I must add that whatever the case, the outcome says nothing about the validity/meaningfulness of your crossover. Saying that videogames and light-hearted comedies are perfectly incompatible and that combining them never "makes sense" shows some pretty superficial understanding of how media works, IMO.

The part about the bacon was more me just being silly and joking around, not a serious comparison at all.

I agree with this extremely hard. The question of whether or not it gets popular has no bearing whatsoever on how good it is. Make what you like, as well as you can, and if the fanbase isn't there, so be it.

As someone whose fandoms are tiny, thank you ^-^

"not many people in videogame fandoms watch comedies"

That's an...interesting generalization

"not many people in videogame fandoms watch comedies"

Huh. Why do you say so, OP? I guess it depends on the videogame. And the comedy.

OP Here

Yeah, I do realize that's a broad statement. Of course, there are people who enjoy watching comedies and playing videogames.

As you mentioned, it depends on the comedy and videogame. In this case, it's a niche comedy and a fps game. Being a fan of both things, as well as participating in both fandoms is uncommon?

It's more like, either you get the joke or not. If not, you have to watch an episode/clip/etc. or play the game/watch gameplay videos/etc. to get it. Then again, you can always explain the joke.

I must have imagined all those Parks and Rec text crossovers I saw using videogame screenshots.

That would make me sad, because most of those were great.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I enjoy video games and participate in a video game fandom, but I enjoy comedies. ???

But chocolate-dipped bacon is totally a thing, too, and lots of people love it. Savory + Sweet, whether in food or crossovers. Let your flag fly, OP!

Fourthed. Chocolate-covered bacon is really, really good.

One Easter we got bored at work, so we made chocolate dipped bacon with toffee crumbles and put in on a plate next to a deep fried Cadbury creme egg. Y'know. For fun. And science?

Came here to say this.

People mix bacon and chocolate all the time, with amazing results. A pub in my area sells chocolate chip & bacon cookies and they're the best damn thing on the dessert menu.

I have had a dark chocolate bar with pieces of bacon in it. I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was.
