I don't like associating with people who are openly in fandom.

I assume you mean that they are open about being in fandom IRL? Also, does it make a difference what fandom they are in? Because AFAIA, it is fairly common for classic Holmesians and, say, Trekkies to talk about their fannish activities.

I kind of understand this. I get embarassed by people (usually obnxious teenage girls) who wear their fandom pride on their chest.

however, if a person likes a show.movie/etc and wants to discuss, talk fandom, sure. But please don't put it on blast. (I've been too excited to discuss fic once, and the person backed out. However, a friend of mine discovered I wrote fic and she admitted she did too; we act fannishly together, but never OUTLOUD)

I will never understand people who are embarrassed by liking fandom. If being happy with the things you like and not being afraid to show it is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Loud yelling/squealing is obnoxious but that goes for any hobby, not just fandom.

My view might be shades by what I study, but seriously everyone I know my age* are into some kind of fandom. Not everyone does internet fandom, fanfics and such. But regularly quoting stuff, talking about their fav shows/films/games and in general being overexcited about their media interests, is both common and accepted.

Yelling/Squealing is annoying 9 out of 10 times if done by anyone over the age of 10, no matter the subject.

*Heck even most of my family members

It's not that is a bad thing when people are proud to be in fandom, but rather that some us were taught it was a very shameful thing to do. My family used to tell me they felt embarrased of me liking cartoons and stuff and treated me like I was doing something really terrible, so I internalized that way of thinking quite hard.

Even several years later, I prefer to enjoy fandom in a secretive way. I'm actually jealous of people who are very outspoken about being in fandom, but I simply cannot do it.

This is the reason I do consider a triumph I was able to tell my SO I was in fandom, tho (he kinda had to make me do it, but I'm glad he did because he's been 100% supportive of it ever since.)

This is a fair point.

I guess I was lucky that my parents never gave me crap for liking nerdy stuff. I mean, my mom got to the point a few years ago where she won't buy me games or ygo cards for Christmas/birthdays anymore (she says she doesn't want to buy me "toys" since I'm an adult), but she's never been derisive of my hobbies outside of that. And I really can't complain about whatever she chooses to get me for free.

ETA: I think the reason I reacted the way I did to airt was that they weren't just embarrassed for themself but they were actually embarrassed by other people in fandom and that sounded really judgey.

AYRT

You have a valid point there. OP did sound a bit judgey, and it's not really giving us a lot of context of why she/he thinks that way or in which situations she/he feels like that.

(Ahh, I'm a bit jealous about your family now. I wish my family were like that. ;) )

I've embarrassed myself a few times at cons, which is sort of why I try not to bring it up too often, unless I know the other person is into the same things. Even then I'm cautious because I don't want to come across looking odd. Still, I kind of resent the industry people who made me feel bad, because I was swept up in the moment. Ah well whatever.

I can't really blame you for that. I was the same way for a very long time. I only have a handful of friends that I really talk about fandom with. For the most part my interactions with other fans are fleeting at best and often disappointing. Not to mention awkward.
