Honest question, but what's the appeal of reboots to begin with?

/never been involved in a fandom that's had a reboot

More movies or TV episodes or whatever of [thing you like]. That's mostly the appeal.

Especially in cases where it would be unlikely or impossible to have new examples of [thing you like] whether for commercial reasons or for time.

Of course all too often it doesn't really work out because the people aren't that interested in the original. But sometimes you get your Battlestar Galacticas. Heck, if you think about it, The Next Generation is a reboot in a way.

It can revitalize a fandom, for one.

Hit of nostalgia for the older viewers, the ability to allow teenage and tweeny viewers to get all elitist about their "new" version being superior to the old version and have something to show those oldies that new generation is totally better than those old squares.

Some of the time it's like having a canonical AU fanfiction that lets you retread an old favourite thing with a bit of a twist (new actors, new time, new effects, etc.). Not only that, if it's especially old or dated, it can bring in new fans or draw back old ones.

Having a retelling adds to the myth of the source material (fans technically know the hammered outline of the stories) as well as give room for reinterpretation. Creatively, that's kind of fun to think about. That's not always the case of course, since it's probably often a lazy rehash for a quick profit. The way I think about it though is similar to plays; different directors take and adjust a script and can produce wholly different takes (however entertaining or not).

Tried and true plots and universes with hotter, younger actors. :)

This. You cash in on the existing fanbase, cast younger hot people, AND if they're relative unknowns you don't have to pay them as much as you would the original actors.

Laziness.

The creators don't have to come up with a genuinely new idea, and jaded OS fans don't have to go see movies involving new concepts.
