Good stuff is really hard to find, but what can help is fixing your AOOO search terms (if that's where you're looking). Sort by most comments or kudos on finished works only and you should start to have some luck. I have even better luck if I do that search and limit it to single-chapter works, because sometimes people write a boatload of chapters and end up with an artificially-inflated comment count (vs. actual quality of the story).

That operates on the principle that the fics with the most kudos and comments are actually any good, though.

In two of my current fandoms that's laughably untrue.
