It really shouldn't be that hard to create and maintain a distinction between personal taste and what the marketplace demands. If publishing really is like that, it's very silly.

If you worked for a company that designs cellphones, and you were heard going around the office saying you don't like smartphones and think they're stupid, that would not help you.

If you worked for an investment bank and were heard going around the office saying you think the excess profits tax ought to be reintroduced, that would not help you.

If you worked for a video game company and were heard going around the office saying you should just stop releasing console versions and go PC-only, that would not help you.

If you work for any company that has a big magic machine that just cranks out money, and you are known as "That person who doesn't like the magic money machine" you are endangering your career. Does that clarify the problem?

No, I still think it's very silly. OP isn't saying that they should stop making John Green books and books like them, just that OP does not care for them personally.

DA

It is very silly. Unfortunately it's also very true. In many industries you really do have to pick and choose who/what you complain about within the context of your workplace (or in the context of representing your workplace).

Oh, I don't deny it's true.

I don't think it is silly, in your workplace you express and are loyal to your company, your company's views and opinions, it doesn't matter if you work in a grocery store or for the President, or anything in between.

It is only silly or wrong, if you can't have views opposing to your company* when you aren't on the clock, so the OP can talk as much as s/he wants about how she dislikes John Green or any other author as much as s/he wants with her friends and family, heck even random people on the bus.

I couldn't say how idiotic I thought some of the stuff at my former workplace was to my customers, bosses and to some degree colleagues but I had every right in the world to complain about the same thing to my friends.

*With the exception of racism/sexism and/or other illegal or oppressing views where your company has every fucking right in the world to fire you for.

Exactly. Naive opinions like "gosh, everyone in an industry should be allowed to say whatever they like with no repercussions whatsoever!" are, well, naive. Yes, it *should* be like that but every industry is political. Kind of stupid to miss why OP phrased his/her confession that way.
