AYRT
(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)Because people should be made to be your idea of "normal" so they can act the way you think they should.
I'm autistic and I've lived my life this way and learned to function with what I got, and if you don't mind I'd rather not have my entire brain rewired so I can be someone's idea of normal.
If an autistic person WANTS to be cured? Awesome, good for them I hope they get what they want. But no one should have to be forced to for one entitled person's idea of normal.
People have been using excuses for bad behavior for decades. IF all the autistic people were to be cured the badly behaved people would just find something else to use and that would become annoying.
Please don't use the bad cases and people who abuse the label as an excuse for being disgusting to actual autistics.

I'm glad to see this language used after dealing with another person on the spectrum who rails against "cure" language a lot. As someone who is autistic, I understand her issues with "cure" language, but her approach seems focused on those of us who have adapted and not on those whose motor/communication skills make it difficult to live independently.
