A lot of people I've seen talking about it specified that they were tortured and the women were raped, including both fans and articles.

I think that's a pile of crap, because I don't think a group that was so all right with locking the Termites up and torturing them would be that picky when it came to who they raped. Rape's not about sex, but about power, so I don't see why they'd stop at the women.
