Well, don't keep us in suspense -- which characters are on the list? And how/why DO they kill themselves?

+1

I do something similar. Remember those "depression hurts" commercials that are always black and white with a person gazing out a window forlornly or staring blankly at a television while the dog sits nearby, unable to help? For some reason those really strike a chord with me, and I can't stop putting some of my favorites in that mindset - sometimes all alone and heading toward suicide.

But I can never seem to flesh out a story. It's just "X is full of despair and I have all the feels about it."

That sounds interesting...I've never done this in particular, but I have done that "put a character in the place of this other thing I saw."

What specific characters are some of the "X" characters you mention?

Kevin Ryan (Castle), Bright Abbott (Everwood), Kevin Walker (Brothers and Sisters), Zack Morris (Saved by the Bell), Percy Weasley and Harry Potter, to name...most of them, actually.

I once wrote a tries-to-commit-suicide fic for a fandom I loved. I'd been traumatized by a death fic (since blocked from memory) and needed the character to reach a place that desperate, but find a way back w/ help.

a tangent once again, but this secret reminded me somehow of agatha chritie's and then there were none.

it's the noose, i suppose.

I do that too sometimes. Problem is, my opinions on it differ drastically from fandom-at-large's opinions on it. (Basically, I tend to figure that anyone who's shown to deal with their problems by attempting to hurt other people is unlikely to shift to attempting to hurt themselves.) Between the fact that it's not really a common topic and the fact that I'm weird even in the groups of people who want to talk about it, I don't get many opportunities.

That's not really true though?

I do this too. I'm in fandom for the gen h/c, and my brain automatically finds the characters for me in a new show which read to me as experiencing bouts of depression. It's a theme I keep coming back to in both my reading and writing.

(H/c is the best catharsis.)
