Gilmore Girls.

OP

That came out a little past my childhood, but even if it hadn't I don't think it would have been quite the same. I wanted a private school experience that was treated as normal, not a stereotypically exclusive TV private school for rich kids and geniuses on scholarship that the protagonist only went to because of special circumstances.

But Rory's experience is treated as normal. Yes, it's expensive/exclusive, but the students there also show a range of intellectual aptitude (Louise and Madeline) and personality types. IDK, I went to private Catholic school and I found GG reflected my high school experience better than any other tv show I knew. Although because I was in marching band like Lane was at Stars Hollow High, I always wish we'd gotten to see a little more of that. :P

I went to a Catholic college, and oh my god, it was the college version of Chilton. Right down to me being Rory. :P

Dunno if you'll ever see this but the school in Adventures of Shirley Holmes might fit the bill... the main character was a super brain child and daughter of a diplomat, but I didn't get the feeling that everyone at the school was super rich/smart.
