I actually don't understand the appeal of "they investigate a cool unexplained case." The show did that. The show did that every week. What need is there for fanfic? What would the fanfic do that would be different from the show? Not saying that all fic has to be shippy (because god no, it doesn't), but I don't understand why someone would want fic that just rehashes what the show does.

Well, if they liked the way the show did it then I can understand why they would want to see fic that did it as well, especially since X-Files has been off the air for a long time and it's not like people can tune into new episodes to see Scully and Mulder investigating weird cases

But by your reasoning, why would the show (or any show) need any additional seasons after season one? Season one all had episodes of investigating cases, so you don't need more seasons, right?

People don't always write or read fic because they want something the canon didn't provide, sometimes they simply want more of what the canon gave them in the first place, period.

+1 Not specifically X-files, but I didn't fall in love with the show because of its romance and cuddles, I fell in love with the adventures and the stories. If I want romance and cuddles there are plenty of romance based canons to go read, I want the adventures that the show has stopped making.
