Bill is just Will with a B. Cause people used to use the same names over and over again (the pool of names used was smaller) and so they had to get a little creative with nicknames. Switching letters was one way.

William > Will > Bill
Margaret > Meg > Peg
Mary > Molly > Polly
Robert > Rob > Bob
Richard > Rick > Dick
Sarah could become Sally and Sadie

But I agree with you on Bill. Total "dad name."
