the femslash / femmeslash thing - most people accept 'fem' as short for female, but in the lesbian subculture there's whole big drama about femme/butch gender roles etc., so to them calling it femmeslash is basically saying it's all about ultra-feminine lesbians instead of just lesbians. Although, there are still plenty of old school lesbians who like 'femmeslash'. People also get annoyed when it's called 'Sapphic' a lot.

(I just use girlslash and avoid the whole drama).

That's what happens when you attach too much baggage to a word. It seems that most people don't even realize there's a difference, it's only those who are offended by it that make a distinction.

Well, I think I may have made it seemed like people were deeply offended, when it's more people think it's annoying and makes the fandom seem kind of pretentious and stupid. (That's more a complaint against sapphic, although it applies to femmeslash too).

Sometimes I wonder when politics snuck in and ate fandom. I wish it'd get the hell out. Fandom is supposed to be fun! Not PC.

Ooh, that clears it up. I didn't realise 'fem' was meant to be short for 'female'. I thought it was short for 'femme', the French word. The femme-butch thing never came to mind. (But then, I don't really care one way or the other about those roles.) I still use 'femmeslash', though. It just makes more sense to use the whole word as it's only two extra letters.

'Sapphic' sounds rather pretentious to me, though, except in certain fandoms and relationships.

Yeah. A subtle one, I suppose, but then again... It's just a fandom thing. Oddly enough. Personally, when I see femmeslash it invokes the connotations of femme and butch, which irritates me to no end. Plus, it's kinda cutesy too. Femslash just seems to describe the genre as a whole. There's been a fair bit of discussion surrounding the issue, but it was a while ago.

To someone outside of the genre, it sounds like splitting hairs.

When I first started playing Gaia (in '03!), I thought that Ruby was Peyo's sister and I thought that Ian was older, but as they evolved the site and the plot, all that turned out to be untrue ^_^;;

12. 'Pretty' just doesn't cut for a lot of people, dear, especially if we're talking about serious fanfics. Fanarts, on the other hand, are a different story all together.
