Well, Battle Royale ended with the system in place . . .

This.

Did the movie sequels end with it in place? I know it's not canon to the book (I've only read the manga), but I also know that they made movie continuations.

One could also argue that the two protagonists "got away" in Battle Royale to a place where the Game wasn't an issue for them again.

It's been a very long time since I watched BR2, but in that they were rebelling against the system, and arguably they succeeded... but we don't really see the knock-on effects so much, iirc.

And your point is what? HG should have been even more like Battle Royale in every way so people would have a better reason to call it a ripoff?

Downer endings are pretty much the standard for Japanese horror though. Hunger Games ending that way probably wouldn't have gone over as well.

I'd argue the important part of the Dystopia is not the dismantling of the system, but just showing us how messed up it is... and thus it's not really necessary to see the rebellion. I mean there is nothing wrong with showing us the rebellion, but that's really another story, showing the horror of the system while it's still intact is the most important part.
