D'aaawwww. Baby Watson is adorbs.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ageist jerk.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
But that would make him so much less Watson-y...

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Watson is Watson because of his personality, not because of his wrinkles or lack thereof.

Yeah, that artwork looks nothing like BBC's John Watson. No thanks. I'd rather see him as he really looks, and Martin is adorable.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
this. stylization is difficult, but I actually like what the age implies of the characters (not that OP couldn't, but I need the look to believe it)

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Martin's pretty fug, but I still think art should actually look like the characters. It's a problem I have with a lot of anime-esque style art for live action shows/movies (see also: all the weirdly bishonen portrayals for the Winter Soldier.)

judging by this fanart, it's smooths out his wrinkles, gives him a different chin, a thinner nose, thicker lips and makes his face proportions more symmetric.

so a little less like discovering a top notch spa, a little more like discovering the wonders of korean cosmetic surgery.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
...what I'm getting from this is that I need to look into Korean plastic surgery

tbh:

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That John fanart makes me think of heavily airbrushed pictures that end up dipping into the uncanny valley.

I understand that drawing an aged character with wrinkles and stuff can be difficult (especially when you're not used to it) But I kind of get annoyed when fan art "beautifies" characters to the point you can't even recognize them anymore.

I'm not a fan who thinks Martin Freeman is extremely sexy (he's okay looking in my book, not my type though) but it's not like he looks hideous or anything like that.

I've noticed this a lot with slash fan art (in multiple fandoms) where guys get drawn in an extremely feminized and "prettified" manner.
If I took a shot for every time that these fan arts were also in a (poorly done) manga style, I would also have alcohol poisoning.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
so? Who cares if fans want to prettify their characters? The status quo for all women on tv is ridiculously gorgeous, but men can be old, wrinkly, pock-marked, have ugly noses, etcetcetc. It's only fair that we imagine them being prettier :P

"Uncanny Valley" was the first thing I thought, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL I feel this might be a troll.

Every time fanart like this of John Watson is posted on FS, the comments are more in the nature of "Why do these creepy fanartists have to make him look like a teenager?"

Having said that, there are definitely enough people who do prefer him like this.

I prefer him with realistic wrinkles and his adorable actual nose, but live and let live.

I also lol'ed at the secret. Seaweed masks, what? Would make a nice fic plot... In ACD's books they went to Turkish baths after all.

hehe at 'creepy fanartists'. Those perverts.

Meh. I hate fanart that 'bishies-up' or prettifies the actors.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks like the ken version of himself. Related are there Sherlock action figures.

There were Sherlock figures available, but they're mostly sold out. Only the cheaper version of John is still available.

The cheaper version costs £170 (US $274), btw. Yes, that is the *cheaper* version. The more expensive one was £220 (US $355).

Wow, I can see why you're saying this anonymously. Shallow, much? lmao

Image

Something is telling me that is just not what he looked like when he was younger.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-27 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hah! I'm guessing that OP didn't really mean they like fanart where he "looks younger" - it should have read "looks prettier" or "looks like someone else entirely".

Kind of weird to be fanning someone who isn't good enough for you, isn't it?
