I hadn't heard about this controversy, but wow, people want to exclude women from panels?

Also, that's a lot of sexism from a guy named Dara. Just sayin'. (Apologies if it's a traditional male Celtic name.)

It actually is. Dara means 'oak' (the county Kildare comes from 'cil doire', church of the oak) or alternately 'wealthy/fertile', depending on derivation, and it's a traditional name from Irish mythology that's attached to several kings, princes and champions in legend, including the owner of the Brown Bull of Cooley in the Táin Bó Cuailnge.

AYRT - Mea culpa.

That's a lot of pretty names.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand what his name has to do with it. Would it make a difference if it had been a female name? Are you being sexist because he's being sexist? I'm lost here.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT - Dara is typically a female name, so I was saying it was ironic that he'd be sexist when he has a female name - but it was a dumb comment because it's a traditional Irish male name, and anyway, not all languages follow English naming conventions. (Not to mention male names even in English that end in -a. I can't think of any off the bat but I'm pretty sure there are some.) So yeah, mea culpa.

It's not that, if his name had been Jennifer would it have mattered? Ha ha, a MAN named Jennifer is being sexist, look at the man with the GIRL'S name being sexist, it's funny and ironic because his name is typically associated with women and we must reinforce those gender norms?

Even without the Irish thing, an argument against sexism it kinda doesn't work.

AYRT - I... wasn't trying to reinforce gender norms? I'll admit it was definitely stupid though, and I'm sorry. I wasn't being pro-gender norms though, I was just being an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
they admitted their mistake.
what do you want? you don't get stamps for being rightER, sorry to say. we're all out of those.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is probably why everyone has let it go and no one has posted about it again

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
They admitted they were wrong about the name, sure but OP's point wasn't that the name was male, it was that the "gender" of the name shouldn't matter in the first place, esp. considering we're talking about sexism here

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a stupid comment whether or not it was a traditional male name. Going after someone for having a wussy girl name like dumb girls have doesn't really help anyone's point here.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-26 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No, a while back, the BBC made some rule that you HAD to have one woman per panel, because they had some major issues with representation on some of their popular panel shows. Not everyone agreed. I'd actually consider O'Briain a smart feminist, but he objected to it being a rule because he felt it'd make female guests into obvious tokens. It hasn't, though.
