"A certain person at Level-5 has stated that Professor Layton was not only inspired by Phoenix Wright, but that he was basically supposed to be Phoenix Wright with all the "bad" qualities removed."

WTF? The bad qualities are what make Wright interesting!

As for Vs., I still haven't finished it, but my impression so far is that it's a sort of delayed coming of age for Phoenix, explaining how he changed so much between the third game and Apollo Justice. Layton starts out as a mentor who helps Phoenix along the way, and then everyone who gives Phoenix support and guidance is removed from the picture one way or another, and he's left to struggle on his own while trying to protect the remaining people he cares about. (I'm interested to see how this all shakes out, so no major spoilers, please!)
