I had come here to say something similar to this.

I've been involved in fandom in one way or another for 16 years, and it's been like this for that entire time (and I have to assume that it was like that before then, as well. I guess it's possible that, pre-internet, it was more "communal," but given the way zines worked, I doubt it).

There are always clusters of people who aren't interested in the competition, however, and those are the people you've got to find and hang out with.
