Funny thing, a few years ago I was in a fandom with barely any female characters who got barely any screen time, and I had a strong suspicion that a lot of people were like this in varying degrees (mostly interested in slash, at least, even if that's not what they were there for), but pretending not to. There were repeated conversations where people gave lip service to the female characters and didn't say a word against them, but then as soon as they'd said their piece they carried on doing whatever else. Obviously I have no proof of this, but it's my suspicion that there was at least some of this going on, and it amuses me to think about.
