I feel you. Motivation is pretty much what makes a character what they are. If Character A saves a kid because hey, it's the right thing to do, and someone comes back and says he did it because he wants to get with the kid's hot, rich mom, I'm going to say you've misinterpreted the entire story to the degree that you may as well be watching something entirely different.

At the same time, I really hate fights about whether a characters actions were 'right' or 'wrong' or whether their motivation makes them sympathetic or not. Like, I don't care if a character's tragic backstory doesn't justify murdering a bus full of orphans; if there's reasonable enough explanation for how that character got to where they are now, I'll be on board.
