So are you/the studies you've read against streaming kids? Because I moved schools for fifth grade to a school that didn't stream and as a book smart kid, I hated it. I was bored to tears and never wanted to go to school. (I would often fake being sick so I could stay home and read instead of having to go to school. I still ended up with As because it was too damn easy for me.) And I'd never wish non-streaming on another book smart child. It sucks. I don't know that there is an easy answer to challenging some kids while preserving the self-esteem of others, but...

It's ages since I read them, but as far as I recall they weren't exactly against streaming, but pointed out that streaming affects different kids differently. I'm pretty sure streaming is actually better for gifted/ high achieving kids though. It's a problem for the kids who start thinking that they're not capable because they've been put into lower classes. But, like a lot of things in teaching, it's super tricky to get a balance that allows each kid to learn and achieve at their potential when dealing with limited fund and resources.

I had some streamed classes and some not, and whether I was bored or not depended mostly on how the teacher handled things. Of course, we're really past the age where having a teacher recite information at the front of the class is a sensible activity, so this should be even easier now.
