The difference is that unlike....99% of famous people, he apologizes if he's out of line the few times it happens. Even though I don't follow SH anymore, I still follow him.

The fact that he's gone this far incident free is impressive within itself.

Bunch of J2/Wincest tinhatters who are utterly convinced that the Destiel tinhatters are way more out there than them. The same phenomenon exists in reverse as well.

Honestly, no matter what you're like, someone is going to dislike you. It's just the way of things. People aren't perfect either so no matter how chill he is he'll probably screw up eventually, and while of course it's possible that people might overreact to that, I wouldn't worry about it.

Fandom can be fickle anyway. The people who really like him are probably going to continue to like him unless he does something terrible, and the people who don't...well, you can't do anything about that.

That's how the cycle goes. For a little while, someone is PERFECT FLAWLESS SO IMPORTANT YOUR FAVE COULD NEVER (this lasts longer for some than others) and then they say something slightly dumb or ill-thought-out and then they're TRASH GARBAGE SCUM.

It really doesn't even have anything to do with what they do or who they are. It has everything to do with fads, herd-mentality, and immature minds who think completely in black-and-white absolutes (and also have no self-awareness about "problematic" things they themselves have said and done). Probably also a misguided craving to set up celebrities as some kind of role model or authority figure, when they're really anything but.

I don't necessarily /get/ why people say this. I understand that no one is perfect and we've all done shit, but since that's the case we can't just wait for one lone perfect person to come around and tell people off because 'they haven't done anything problematic'

There is a huge difference between

"So and so said this and that bothers me. I hope s/he thinks about what s/he said and realizes why it's hurtful and learns from it. If not, I will not continue to support them."

and

"I JUST CAN'T! How could they do this??? They are dead to me! Scum, they should just DIAF." (this is actually pretty mild compare to what I've seen).

If you (general) are going to metaphorically lynch somebody and call them the scum of the earth with no redeeming values whatsoever for doing something "problematic", then you'd better make sure your own nose is clean.

Eh, he's made a couple of missteps before and genuinely apologized for them on his tumblr and people seemed to respond to them positively. He'll probably be fine
