I'm a teacher and I love Harry Potter. I would be excited about the opportunity to geek about it. Bonus: I would've been in Hufflepuff, and I'm well aware of this haha.

What do you teach?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure that would make you an awesome teacher.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yo [teacher's name], what Hogwarts house are you in?"

I don't think that would be weird, if he's one of those teachers who jokes around and geeks out with the students, which he sounds like. I mean how else would you know he likes HP?

OP:

He mentioned he was reading it with his son last year.
I'm also not in his class anymore, but I see him around school a lot.

Okay, next time you see him long enough to say "hey", add "Can I stop you for a second? I remember you were reading HP when I was in your class, and ever since I've been wondering what house you'd be in!"

Say it with a smile. Teachers love being remembered positively; you'll probably make his day.

As a former teacher, I'd have gotten a kick out of this. I bet he'd find it fun.

Did you get along quite well with him? I had a teacher at school who only actually taught me for a year but his classroom and my tutor group's classroom were next door to one another so I still saw a lot of him and managed to have conversations about random shit with him all the time. Obviously within the realms of respecting his authority and my position as a pupil, which I don't think Harry Potter would violate.

And speaking as someone who isn't a teacher but interacts with school aged children and students quite a lot as part of my job, I love it when I get to go off on a tangent and speak about pop culture things we have in common. It suddenly makes me feel like any generation gap isn't so bad.

Just ask the next time HP is brought up. If you're still in High School I understand the feeling of awkwardness, but trust me once you're in college you really do realize teachers are people too. (It helps that you're an adult by then too, which means you realize you have a right to be respected even by teachers.)

Nothing to add except Ravenclaw FTW :)

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Is it weird that I do this for people I know? Even the ones who would have absolutely no idea what I was talking about if I asked them?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Every teacher goes through all four houses.

Fresh out of teacher training, you are a Ravenclaw, bright and bushy and full of knowledge and determined to impart that to eager young questors of fresh education.

After the first term, you are a Gryffindor, you've seen how the system crushes some kids and that there is so much potential being lost and you are determined to fight and change everything.

A few years of that and you are Hufflepuffing your way through the years, ground down and beaten, you just nod yes at every staff meeting and grind the paperwork and marking out.

Six months before retirement you are demob happy and totally Slytherin. Your goal now is to make the little bastards suffer whilst building up a huge backlog of paperwork that will make the headmaster shriek in pain when he sees how much is undone while you pick up your silver carriage clock, and head off to the boatyard for your 25 ft retirement present to yourself and a campaign to take over as sailing club secretary.

Damn, I never thought of that. I'm impressed.

I'm a teacher and I endorse this message.

(OP, I would not be weirded out if one of my students asked me that.)

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
After you ask him what house make sure to ask what baseball position he'd play.

!!!

I'm pretty sure I'm a Ravenclaw. Aside from generally liking research and reading and learning weird and wonderful things, I don't have nearly the ability to read and care about social relationships that Slytherin would require, and I'm not really brave enough for Gryffindor. I generally stand still and face things, yes, but that's mostly because the thought of running is scarier, since it involves turning my back on the scary thing and not being able to see it. It's not bravery so much as stubbornness and paranoia -_-;

Hufflepuff might be a good second choice, though. I'm not particularly good with loyalty, but I can manage amiability and willingness to help, so I probably wouldn't do too badly there.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
OT but I keep getting so annoyed that Ravenclaw has a raven in this version of the coat of arms. Their animal is not a raven.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe try casual conversation about Pottermore. Then you might find out if he'd been sorted or not.

(Ravenclaw ftw!)

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Although Pottermore sorting is flawed and only based on numbers.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, what you should do is compile a short list of the known character traits for the houses... then just ask the teacher very gently, who do you think you are as a person? Would you say you are like -this-?

I don't really see why you can't work that out just from his personality? That's kind of how the idea works, isn't it?
