Certainly seen it these last few days with the people who object to IP logging being utterly humiliated and dumped on by the F!S BNFs. Having been very badly bullied in RL, the dogpiles of the last few days have been a fairly triggery to read. Sad to see some people who I'd have thought would know better have been involved too. The actions of the defenders of IP logging have made me strongly reconsider my membership of the comm.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's certainly unfair and I wish it wasn't so extreme.

On the other hand... like, I can understand the frustration that people feel, given the existing situation with the trolling, and the frustration that people have with the trolling, and the suspicion that people have that some of those objecting to IP logging may or may not be some of the trolls. It's a bad situation all around.

Hi troll

*tips fedora*

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The first anti-IP-logging post I saw was so ludicrously over-the-top I'm not surprised things got even more melodramatic.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-30 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
F!S BNF?
no such thing
f!s is not a fandom

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. We have had people shipping and writing fic about users here, which kinda qualifies it.

But even if that wasn't true, everyone here is a fan of some sort and some named people get well known so.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt
so few named users that all of them are well known, doesn't mean they're BNF
there was no such fic recently.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
not all of them. I definitely remember some more than others. some I don't remember at all.

and okay? there doesn't have to be recent fic

I hope you realize this is a stupid argument

Sorry, but yes there are. Quite a few who are immediately referenced by others within the first few comments for any thread. "Can't wait for X to see this!" "Oh, hello, Y, I wondered when you would turn up!" etc. It may not qualify according to a strict sense of fandom, but it IS a group of people gathered in one place to discuss shared feelings about a particular subject, which is another way of viewing fandom.
cloud_riven: Cute cigarrette box and coffee cup, with smiley faces, holding hands! Adorable! (breakfast lunch dinner)

We're also a community, especially more so since General Comments became an actual thread treated like forum of sorts. We're going to , recognize and remember one another the more we run into each other (more cross-fandom mingling) and befriend/avoid each other. A prevalent user, and I'm not going to deny that there are folk who have admirers (and devoted haters), is definitely going to be thought of by others, but that's a whole different game than picturing a user here who has so much sway as to guide this comm, or be turned to like some lol idol. That's such an overestimation, man.

ayrt
depends on how you define BNF
many users come and go anyway. So one day you have BNF and rommorow you don't.

Well, like "Mary Sue" and "hipster", "dogpile" has officially become a completely meaningless word.

Right up there with "SJW" and "Problematic"
ariakas: (Default)

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-10-31 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
No, wait, wait I think I can still define these:

Mary Sue: A female character I dislike.

Hipster: Someone who likes things I find pretentious.

Dogpile: A group of more than one person commenting with the opposite opinion to mine.

SJW: Someone who says something I don't like about something I like.

Problematic: An aspect of a piece of media that I don't like.

INTERNET PIRATE TERRORIST ILLUMINATI: The people Case is selling our IP addresses to.

Along with "trigger." "Fairly triggery"? WTF.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Examples? All I've seen over the past few days were those "IP LOGGING IS ON!!!" threads in the top comment and a couple of people asking them to stop because they were annoying. Telling someone to stop being annoying isn't bullying imo.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-10-31 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
F!S has BNF's? That's news to me.

Anyway, I'm sorry you got bullied, but some of the reactions to IP logging (probably not yours, but we can't tell cause you're anon) have been positively ludicrous, which is why I get there were strong reactions. Still doesn't excuse bullying, but these things are bound the get reactions.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
So are you rad!fem or dethtoll's stalker?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
"The actions of the defenders of IP logging have made me strongly reconsider my membership of the comm. "

lmao that was legitimately hilarious. 10/10

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah I get it now. Since IP logging only affects anons, who by definition aren't comm members.

Took me too long to get that. Funny, anon.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
That wasn't how I saw the situation at all.

I thought the IP logging protesters were acting so crazy so as to be if not actual trolls, then very close to it.

Posting statements such as have been posted recently (eg "IP LOGGING IS ON!" when it says that on every page already, plus every time you leave a comment) and not expecting some sort of amused response would be very odd.

Dogpiling? If several people replying to one comment is dogpiling, then that's the main activity of this whole comm.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Why are so many people responding to this individual as though she isn't a blatant troll. C'mon, F!S. this is child's play.

I am going to need links to these "dogpiles of the last few days." I know I haven't been around much, but I think I would have noticed if something like that happened.
