Themes/Plots in Fanfic

What are some themes/plots in fanfic that you enjoy so much (and perhaps is uncommon) that you will read it in fandoms you are not in?

Right now I'm reading a fantastically well written slavefic for bandom. I'm not in bandom, I never was, I just shamelessly like the story. Here.

With that out of the way, if it's well plotted, I don't mind reading fic from other fandoms and just treating it as I would original fic, so long as it holds up. I also don't mind reading smut for those purposes.

Oh yeah, transformation fics! Though I mostly enjoy animal transformations (or werewolves). Extremely disappointed by the lack of werewolf fic in several of my fandoms. :(

I'm not a fan of werewolf fic myself, admittedly, but I don't mind it. I'm more a fan of the weird transformations: forced feminization/bimbofication, trees/statues, cat/dog where the person takes on some parts of the animal (like heats).

Awkwardly enough, this means that, even though I like the idea of forced heats, I don't actually like A/B/O because the idea of heats are built into the structure. I prefer things where the transformation isn't normal in that universe.

I have two that I adore (and are AU enough that I can enjoy in any fandom). The first is sugar daddy AUs. I read a great one in the SNK fandom. The second is mob boss AUs. I love the hell out of those but they are so rare!

Themes/plots, or kinks? Because there's a lot of shit that I'll read even if I'm not in the fandom if it hits certain kink buttons.

Realistic psychological trauma as a result of canon events. (By which I mean actually realistic, not healing cock.)

THIS IS MY KINK! Especially when it comes to Steve Rogers. Steve Rogers + Realistic Psychological Trauma = (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

I want Bucky Barnes with Realistic Psychological Trauma.

Together, we can rule the MCU.

I take any scraps when it comes to fics about Steve these days. Even short, stream of consciousness stuff.

Noir/Prohibition AUs, Space AUs, and Historical AUs barring Roman/Gladiator AUs, because for some reason I hate them and they're often slave fics which are extremely hit-and-miss where I'm concerned.

Bodyswap, I just love that stupid trope so much, and if it's in a random fandom the more GEN is is for me the better.

Merfolk AUs, especially if they're a little dark in tone and especially if the main pairing is femslash.

I really like stories that feature a character returning to their hometown after years being away (bonus if they'd left under less than happy circumstances in the first place) and having to deal with all the loose ends they'd left behind, most notably a romantic entanglement. Ideally there'd be a large cast and the protagonist would have to interact with all of them but the focus should be on the romance.

I'd even take non-fic recs if you've got them, I like that plot so much.
