I think that people do this a lot.

I think that people also often promote mediocre fics that have trendy themes in them, like an AU setting suggested in a popular text post, or a pairing that the fandom plays lip service to in order to seem progressive, but isn't genuinely invested in. They didn't really enjoy the generic trendy fic they're reccing, but they want brownie points.

One big fic in one of my fandoms is exactly this. It's more that the 'edgy' themes and SJW-appeal made it popular rather than the actual fic itself (which is mediocre at best, and if it didn't have those elements no one would have paid any attention to it).

And obviously, expressing dislike of said fic automatically makes you an -ist, rather than someone who just thinks the story sucks.

ayrt

Yeah, this is a huge problem atm. I like fics that explore social justicey concepts (like, what if [character] was trans, stuff like that), but only when the author actually gives a shit. It's so obvious when people are only writing something because they think people will give them cookies for it.

I've never come across that, writers expecting cookies for that sort of stuff.

Perhaps there just aren't very many social justicey concepts in my fandom's fanfics? Actually, I think there are a decent amount of trans fics, or dealing with sex change issues of one sort or another. Perhaps I've just been lucky so far?

I imagine that it depends on the demographics of your fandom. I notice it more in newer fandoms (often with either a lot of younger fans or a certain type of twenty somethings), and in fandoms where ficlets and drabbles are more common than longer fics.
