(Anonymous) 2014-10-31 03:20 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, except that fruits ARE alive, and while they've evolved (and been bred) to be eaten, that's not the primary purpose of a fruit. The primary purpose of fruit is to propogate the seeds of the parent plant. It's edible (and perhaps delicious) to aid that goal, not to please whoever or whatever chooses to eat it. If you eat an apple and toss the core into the garbage where the seeds aren't likely to find fertile soil and good growing conditions, whether or not you consider yourself the "killer" of that living thing is up to you, but you certainly haven't helped the plant any.
You don't have to feel like a piece of shit over this, but you do have to maybe reframe your logic here, because it's faulty. You're drawing arbitrary lines around what's "alive", when what you really mean is "only certain animals I can see and not vermin, insects or plants" and that's going to strike quite a few people as 1) very convenient for your argument but 2) insincere.
