I find that so odd, I'm OVERJOYED when my ships are/become popular because it will give me more fanart/fanfic to consume. But different strokes...

You're hipster. Or there's so many fanworks in popular fandoms that you don't feel like you can add anything new. Or you don't like your fanwork getting under scrutiny which comes with big fandoms. Or you think that people are sheep... wait, that's just being a hipster.

Hate this animated series, btw. So boring. A beautiful wife living with a fat husband and 2+ kids.

OP

No, you're right about the "so many fanworks I feel I can't add anything new" point. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy there's other people making fanworks and doing stuff for my favorite things. Yay! But at the same time, I don't feel like I can bring anything new to the table. So I'm content with being an observer than a creator, I guess.

I made this guess because my friend's like this. In large fandoms she mostly translates fics.)

"Or there's so many fanworks in popular fandoms that you don't feel like you can add anything new."

It's an excuse to not contribute, but I understand this feeling. It's very of the "bah i'm not good enough" kind, but also the "it's been done before anyway boo".

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Or you literally can't contribute something new. I'm a fan of doing certain tropes, and I especially like writing fusions with While You Were Sleeping. My current fandom already has four of them in my pairing, so...why bother?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Have you written a WYWS fusion with Teen Wolf? If so, will you link it? That's really the only rom-com I like and I'd love to read that :)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't, but that's one of my fringe fandoms, so I know there are at least two Sterek ones and a couple others. :) I can only find the Sterek links right now (the second one is better, I think).

Someone has obviously never seen the show.

A beautiful wife living with a fat husband and 2+ kids.

LOL what? Peggy ain't beautiful, Hank ain't fat, and they only have one kid. The other person living with them is an adult relative.

Well, whatever your reasons that's fine, but I don't get 'not wanting to bother people with fanworks from a popular fandom'. Even if you don't create content for a larger fandom, there's still always going to be plenty of fanworks for it. There's nothing you can do if someone hates that the stuff exists in the first place. That's their problem, and would be present even if you weren't involved.

If you don't want to submit anything for a popular fandom because you feel you'll be ignored, I sort of understand. The thing is though, no matter how big the fandom, someone might enjoy your work. It isn't a certainty, but it does happen. I don't think you're wrong for not writing for your fandom, just saying I've def read some delightful fics that didn't get much praise or popularity, but that I look back on with great fondness.

In all my years of fandom I've never shipped a mega popular pairing. I always seem to go for the one tenth down the list, no matter the size of the fandom.

What I have noticed is that I have trouble writing fic for my most beloved pairings. I find it easier to write nearly any other pairing, especially if there's already good fic for my OTP.

I guess that's kind of related? Or perhaps not.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
You probably shouldn't worry about contributing anything new or being original. Honestly if you're in fandom you would usually love the same old stuff repeated over and over again, from fandom to fandom, most of it isn't really NEW. I say if you enjoy it you should just express yourself however you want and if someone else has done something similar oh well that's ok, you will have your own spin on the topic. I like larger fandoms for this reason since there is more to look at and more people to interact with. I happen to be in a lot of small ones, but I always wish there was more appreciation for them.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of fell out of a fandom recently for similar reasons. Every time I thought of a fic I'd like to write, even if the premise was reasonably unique, it already felt like a stale take on the pairing.

I think the problem's compounded by the speed with which something becomes popular and the sheer saturation of stuff that seems to happen overnight (where do these people find time to do things so fast?!). It can go from a few works to dozens/hundreds very quickly and the things you contribute can get swallowed by the tide.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you. I've watched a rare pair where I was literally the only person writing go to a semi-popular pairing. Now someone else has climbed up to BNFdom and I'm completely ignored, despite doing a ton of work. I'm quickly losing all desire to be in this fandom when I have to wade through countless posts screaming about [new fanwork person] while I get maybe a kudos, despite how hard I work.

It can kind of suck to do fanworks when it gets popular because the atmosphere really changes.

Well I've found that the atmosphere/community around a pairing/fandom can shift pretty dramatically when it gets really "popular" (and I'm talking about the REALLY big ones here, I can't really speak to smaller fandoms) if only because there are more people so there are more people you don't really want to have to deal with. I mean yeah, it's great to have all the new works and everything but the wank and drama and hating on other things goes up too so... yeah. Maybe that's a factor in not wanting to keep contributing too?
