Eh, I don't think it's a 'mary sue complaint'... in fact, I agree with you. (And I say this as someone who used to really have fan characters, and admittedly, I kinda did this once or twice on occasion, ack) The only thing I'd make an exception for is stuff like MMORPGs and whatnot for reasons I can't really articulate well at the moment.

p.s. WORD on the traced bases part, too.

I'm with you there, OP. There's an OC ask blog that pops up in the canon tags, and I side-eye that person like there's no tomorrow. No one wants to see your made up character invading the tags.

I don't get this "invading the tags" thing. Oh no, a blog you disapprove of is in the tags. Can't you like...scroll past it or something? Like yeah they should tag "OC" , and if they are you can like...blacklist it or something.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it an invasion, but I do feel a bit of secondhand embarrassment when I see OC posts in the tags. Usually only bothers me when they're the last post on a page so I have to wait a few seconds before more posts load and I can escape.

I only feel secondhand embarrassment when the OC is stolen or bad or they're drawing 15 pics a day of their OC macking on a canon love interest.

But a well drawn/well made OC? Awesome. Good for them, I hope they're enjoying themselves.

Like shipping their fave canon ship? Good for them I hope they're enjoying themselves.

Draw pics for a rarepair? Good for them I hope they're enjoying themselves.

Writing fanfic? Good for them I hope they're enjoying themselves.

Whatever. Fandom is supposed to be fun, about doing stuff you enjoy. As long as someone's not forcing their stuff on people I could literally care less. I'm tired of this "I'm embarrassed for you because you're not doing fandom right!"

Lmao dude... Being embarrassed by something doesn't mean I think they should stop. I get embarrassed when people sing happy birthday to me, but because it makes them happy I don't tell them to quit.

This sounds ridiculous to me. I've seen OC/canon in tags but it's hardly invading. It's like 2, 3 pictures tops. It's not like attention's regulated and there's a limit anyways.

My fandoms fics (that aren't in Japanese) has 90% of the main slash couple, 5% are crack ones and 5% are het... about the main character with an OC, so I agree with you on this one.

OC fanart (non-game related) bothers me the most. Although if the person is really young then I just assume they are just going through a phase and will grow out of it eventually. If they are more or less adults...I would probably side-eye them a bit.

Calling it 'invading' is a bit much. Like, if it was a lot of art all at once, yeah, it'd get annoying, though overall I'm fond of OCs provided they serve more purpose than being _____'s girlfriend/boyfriend. Tracing over screenshots or bases, though...I join your disapproval.

Not a fan of this either; when I'm looking through fandom tags, I'm there because I want to see something I'm already invested in and that I already care about, and that doesn't include OCs. Not sure it's necessarily as malicious as OP seems to make it out to be, with cashing in on a pre-existing character's popularity, but... eh. Doesn't mean I'm that warm towards them.

I can't think of many fandoms where this is common.

Maybe the Dreamworks mashup? Onceler RPs?
