The anime's a reasonable adaptation as far as they go. The animation's pretty bad at times, it tries to mash several of the routes/storylines into one, and obviously it doesn't go into anything in as much depth as the game, but it's not horrendously bad. Whether it'd make sense to someone who hadn't played the game yet I couldn't tell you.

The game is a lot darker and more explicit though, is visually of much higher quality, and gives you a slightly more rounded view. I say slightly because you really need to play both games -- DMMd and DMMd: reconnect -- to get the most out of it, which isn't ideal.

So the anime takes out a lot of the darker and more explicit content? I like the sound of that. Those were the things that put me off the game.

The anime pretty much takes out the entire element of BL (or at the very least reduces it to the sort of general baiting you'd see in any male-cast-dominated shounen series), so anything you might've seen that's character/route specific in that sense isn't in the anime at all. None of the bad ends also.

If you wanted the romance but without the darker/explicit elements of the game, then you might be disappointed though.
