I think that there's a discussion to be had about the portrayal of ambition in the series, but I can't think of a situation in Harry's generation where a character directly went after a Slytherin kid without them instigating something first.

That's true. The Slytherins that we see the most are definitely bullies. The problem comes when the rest of the house is painted in such broad strokes that it seems like there isn't a redeemable one in the bunch. Things like Hagrid saying that all Dark Wizards were in Slytherin (even though he actually knows this isn't true, since at the time they believed Sirius went bad), or how pretty much the entire house leaves before the Battle of Hogwarts.

There are some better parts of the Slytherin portrayal, mainly because of Snape, but even then he is a pretty terrible person.
