What an excellent term.

But on a more serious note, the lack of "flavour" is usually to do with technical aspects, too. It's not just a magical thing that appears out of nowhere. Maybe their characters' emotional responses lack depth? Maybe their language is bland - contains no descriptions, or the dialogue is devoid of emotion?

Unless they ask you for concrit, I do not recommend to talk to them about it at all. Some people are easily discouraged and you may end up simply upsetting them and making them lose faith in themselves. But if they do want concrit (you may ask them about it?), I would second the suggestion to try and formulate what is wrong with the fic in a gentle, non-aggressive way and tell it to them - anonymously or not.
