Actual Advice

Tell them they need to stop putting in a ship and write gen instead. If nothing else it'll break them out of their current habits and might get them to reconsider how they word some things. It'll also decrease the fanfic has to contain shipping echo chamber that has built up.

Sorry. All I heard was "WAH STOP WRITING THINGS I DON'T WANT WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Shut up.

A bit harsh. I think that was some solid advice. Most art can be aided by looking at it from a different perspective. I've often found that when I'm having trouble with drawing for example, that looking at it in a mirror is a very good way to see what's wrong. Likewise, if I'm having difficulty making a character interesting, I change their gender - either way, it doesn't matter, and I don't change anything else about the character, it just helps me see the character in a new way and what I might have been doing wrong.

Anon never said ALL their writing had to be gen, it'd probably be good for practice for example, just something to shake things up, find the issues and improve, then they can go back to shipping with new vigor.

I don't really see anything wrong with that myself.
