It could be you're overthinking it. It could be you're trying to write in a voice/style you think might make your fic gain more readers but it's actually a bad fit for you. It could be that you're still in the process of learning a lot of the technial tricks. It could be a lot of things.

Best thing to do would be to get the advice of an honest beta, or readers you know will tell it to you straight without being an asshole about it, and take it from there.
