And I don't mean this'll happen just because a friend-beta might get soft because they like you too much to be honest. It also happens because even when they're trying to give honestly blunt concrit, a friend-beta will, after a while, know you and your writing so well that they'll understand what you're trying to say in a fic even in spots that are actually kind of unclear, spots that readers who don't know you from Adam could very well find unintentionally misleading, confusing, or off-putting.
Like, if you're trying to write a very clear and articulate presentation, you wouldn't test its clarify by running it by a sibling or a friend who knows you so well that, when you stutter several nonsensical half-finished sentence fragments during a conversation, they can finish your sentences while you talk and always know exactly what you mean. Because a stranger wouldn't know what the fuck you're talking about.
