To paraphrase my comment up there, Sousuke was such a wasted potential, specially because he had a pretty good characterization in High Speed 2 novel.

And oh man, Rei and Nagisa... Where do I even begin with them? They got screwed really badly in season 2 with just an individual episode each. There was SO much they could have done with them argh. This season felt like they where more background characters rather than part of the main cast.

I haven't gotten around to reading High Speed yet, so just going by his portrayal in the show he just felt like a big black hole of boring that kept pulling the show down. Plus I felt like with all the focus on Sousuke, plus Rin's storyline about being Samezuka's captain and Nitori's storyline trying to make the relay, it felt like story-wise all the momentum was with Samezuka, yet Iwatobi kept winning the important races and it made everything feel really unbalanced to me. Regionals especially, it seemed like the majority of the story weight was on Samezuka but Iwatobi won (and it's not like they couldn't have done anything with the cast there! Rei especially, who was the one last season who wanted to participate in the relay the most and didn't get to, and then this season when he does all the focus of that race is on Sousuke).
