sometimes I look at the Sherlock fandom and get horribly jealous. How I wish ACD canon, Granada, and the Soviet series had half as much wonderful currently-produced fanart

Yeah, I wish they had more high quality fanart too but I also comfort myself with the fact that it's at least easier to find good fic for those series...with Sherlock, there's such a high rate of badfic that you really have to search hard for anything that doesn't suck or doesn't involve woobielock

That's generally true, but only if you're a H/W shipper and/or have access to some kind of huge printed zine archive. If we are talking, say, gen casefic with friendshippy undertones, the Sherlock fandom has a considerable amount of it. The ACD/Granada/Soviet fandom? Not so much. Most of the BNFs who write lengthy fic are hardcore shippers (e.g. mistyzeo, tweedisgood, or tigerintheflightdeck).

Ficlets, though, and other forms of short fanfic - about this I can agree with you. We have lots, almost all of it good 9_9
