Wait, weren't there SW comics and novelizations being published right from the start?..

But it is a good example of an old but thriving fandom, as are the Tolkien and the Sherlock Holmes fanbases; the difference being that the Sherlock fandom is all online and so has 1) much more visibility, 2) more visual content and 3) more interactivity. I've never seen another purely (or almost purely) online fandom blossom like this before, so that'd be the main source of confusion for me.

there were a few comics - but I think there were a few years between the novelizations. And let's be honest, some of it is basically just official fanfic.
