People shouldn't treat others like babies who can't defend themselves. Look, I know that he's 'different', but he can stand up for himself. Stop treating him like he needs to be babysitted. it's pretty offensive.

Next time someone's being a dick to a friend of mine, I'll just turn away and not say anything. Because, you know, we're all adults here, you're old enough to take care of your own shit, and having your back would be whiteknighting.

It kind of is though. I've learned this lesson the hard way when I was standing up for a friend who I found out later was a giant shitstain. I should have just stood back and let her take care of herself.

I think that's a different situation, and the lesson there wasn't "don't stand up for your friends" but "pick your friends better."
