This is so weird to me. Dorothy doesn't act like an eight year old in the movie (to me) at *all*. She acts like a fairly sheltered and naive young teen, not a pre-pubesent child. Considering she grew up in middle-of-fucking-nowhere Kansas during the Depression, that kind of innocence isn't exactly surprising (and she was also obviously sheltered by her family and the farm hands, so.....)

I dunno.

This. And that's not even taking into account the era the film was made in. If you compare her to the other heroines of her day, her character accomplished a lot.
