If it's about the numbers, then the lack of genfics makes a pretty strong statement that it's a) not what the majority want to write, and b) not what the majority want to read. Or are you one of the tinhats who think people only write shipfic because we've been somehow brainwashed into thinking that ALL fanfic has to be shipfic?

The numbers count both ways, and complaining about the majority isn't going to change those numbers, but writing more of your own instead of complaining just might.

The problem with saying "write more of your own" is that a lot of people complaining are already writing it, so that just comes across as incredibly patronizing.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-03 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Then they better than anyone should know and accept that what they're writing just isn't going to be balanced with shipping fics.

And frankly, no one's a mindreader on an anonymous thread, so any feeling of being patronized are on your end. All I can tell you is that if I'd seen as many people writing Genfic (or whatever else they complain about there not being enough of "and it's all something else's fault!") as I've seen complaining, I'd have seen a hell of a lot more fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I already write genfic, but I'm mostly in it for the shipping. I don't think it's patronising to tell people to write more genfic if they want more of it.

Genfic is a minority interest, same as any kink. That's all there is to it. Although the fervent genficcers really don't want to hear that.

How do they think they were born in the first place? Shipping is literally how everyone was created. It's the primal urge. Trying to ignore that is pointless.

Romance fics aren't the upstart genre that's taken over gen. It's the other way around, only gen isn't doing a very good job of it.

How so? If they're already writing it, I can only assume they enjoy it and plan to write more anyway.

And even complaining about the lack of numbers isn't a problem. The problem only arises when the blame is irrationally cast on another demonized demographic as though they're the source of the lack when they're really not. If people don't want to write genfic (or anything else you'd like to see more of) then complaining to the people doing other things is not going to help you.

I'm guessing from you're comment you're a gen writer. I don't know whether you write other genres, but for a moment let's pretend you don't. If someone from another minority genre/taste/kink came up to you and whined about the lack of something you have no interest in, would you suddenly ditch genfic and go write what they demand? Or, as in OP's secret, if someone suddenly decided you weren't allowed to post your fic to larger archives, would you change your entire taste just to fit in?

I'm gonna say "no."

But that's exactly what the people complaining are trying to do to shippers.

ayrt

Wrong-o. I'm a shipper who writes almost exclusively shipfic.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-03 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think of it as patronizing, but it is irritating. There's a difference between creating a story yourself and consuming someone else's work.

DA

Exactly.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-03 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
But you can only control your own output. Nagging, guilt-tripping or otherwise hassling other people into writing something you want never turns out well. All you can do is create and enthuse and hope that brings more attention to your cause, and if it doesn't then do the mature thing and don't whine about it.

I certainly don't do anything of that. I just write. And I don't get the big deal about voicing your fandom frustrations every now and then.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-03 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
Then you're not part of the problem. Attitudes like OP's are, because there's a difference between voicing your frustration and expecting the rest of fandom to change to make you feel better about them.
