Yeah, that wouldn't help anything. And it's ridiculous to say that all shipping fics 'belong' on private journals rather than in an archive.

Now, if someone created a multi-fandom gen-only archive, that would be a different matter. I've seen gen-only archives out there. But to say that no shipping fic belongs in any archive just strikes me as silly, saying that one kind of fic is acceptable and another kind is not. That would rub me the wrong way even if I didn't write/read shippy fics myself. It's like saying that there's a genre of literature that doesn't belong in libraries but people can lend books of that genre to each other privately.

It would mean you wouldn't have to wade through shipping fics in your archive, but it would NOT improve the breadth-- by the very definition, you've NARROWED the breadth of stories allowed on the archive, by removing romance. Shippy fics can be horror, science fiction, drama, comedy, fantasy... provided that the ship is involved, those fics can be any genre. Gen fics can be all those things, but can't be romance-- a thing that many people enjoy reading about, and one of the big things a lot of people use the big archives to look for.

The fact that there are a lot of bad/plotless ship fics doesn't make all shippy fics inferior to all gen fics. I've seen plenty of lousy gen fic, too. Just because it's not PWP doesn't mean it's got a plot, and just because it doesn't hinge on a romance doesn't mean it isn't hinging on something other than the quality of the story, be it a particular convention or character or non-romantic relationship. I'm sorry if you feel frustrated by not being able to find the good gen fic as easily as you would like, and I know how disappointing it is when a relationship that isn't tagged or advertised crops up midway into a fic you're invested in and turns you off of it, but this isn't really a solution to your problem.

BUT, if you can find some like-minded gen fans who can put together a gen-only multi-fandom archive in response to what you see as the problem of too much shipping on the existing archives, that could be a real positive outcome.
