dan stevens is a terrible example of someone "reaching that height only to flop". dan stevens hand't built the amount of good will, nor had gathered the acclaim, nor managed to land and be courted for the sort of roles cumberbatch has when he left DA.

it's funny, because i think less of cumberbatch's talents as an actor than what seems to be the consensus among critics (i think he's limited in range and posh brit dude will always be his bread and butter - but hey, colin firth built a career on that). but i still think he's pretty much safe at least for the next half decade wrt to getting film gigs. especially if he lands the oscar nom for the imitation game.

there's nothing else sherlock can do for his career, but his loyalty to the tv project that put his face out there gets a tip of the hat from me.

Okay, how about David Caruso? David Duchovny? Shelley Long?

still no. seriously, benedict cumberbatch was on the film awarded an oscar for best picture just last year (eta: this year, even, we're not in 2015 yet, just very close). and his performance was among the most praised, only reason he wasn't nominated was because, well. fassbender.

i'm not even a fan of this dude and it's crystal clear to me ditching sherlock, when he does, will not be a horrible misstep at this point.

None of those actors had built successful careers outside of their shows at the times when they left. Cumberbatch already has a successful film career. That's the difference.
