I haven't followed this for a while - is he actually portrayed as asexual or is this one of those weird fanon things?

IIRC he never had any interest in any sort of sexual activity and was interested in Amy for her brains and her mind. I think he also said something along the lines of the possibility of being in a relationship without there being any sex.

So, haven't seen this show in a few years, from what I gather, he's basically asexual but I don't think the writers of the show acknowledge it.

IIRC, I don't think the asexual label is official, but Sheldon never shows or expresses a sexual interest in anyone of any gender. So yeah, I tend to think that calling him asexual is fair enough.

I don't think he was ever explicitly described as asexual. In the earlier parts of the series, there were comments he made that seemed to indicate he was celibate by choice rather than asexual, but I think there's sufficient evidence to put him in either or both categories. Then after he had been dating Amy for a while, he said something (I think in a conversation with Penny? I can't remember now) about how things like holding hands and whatnot were not things he would have considered before, but he did now, and there might come a point in the future where he might consider sex with Amy.

I haven't seen the latest season though so I'm not sure if anything's really changed on that front.

I think it's a weird fanon thing. Thanks to canon, there are definitely arguments to be made on both sides of the equation.

I don't think it's such a weird thing. From what I've seen there's not much evidence to imply that he experiences sexual attraction, so even though they've never had a Very Special Episode on the subject it's a fair assumption. That said, I don't understand why people would think this show would handle it with any sort of grace. It always seemed like they were making a joke of it, or just adding it on as another example of Sheldon's weirdness.
