Seriously.

She's not even perfect or flawed in a Mary Sue way.

There needs to be less of this shitty 'female main character has a talent = mary sue' bullshit floating about. Obviously she's the most 'important' character in the setting. She's the main character. If there was somebody else who was more important, they'd be the protag instead.

There's 'most important' and then there's 'most important for attempting multiple suicide, which apparently fucking nobody in the decades-long history of the games was ever clever enough to come up with, and important in a way that means she spends most of her time getting fitted for pretty, pretty outfits'.

And while having no empathy for any other Games participant (except the one young enough to still be cute and the one she wanted to fuck, of course) despite them being just as much victims as she was and thinking of everyone around her as animals isn't exactly a Mary Sue flaw, the way the other characters excuse her for this (or don't excuse her and turn out to be villains, see: Coin) IS very Mary Sue.

Huh? She had sympathy for Foxface and Thresh, and for Peeta before she was into him.

Katniss even had sympathy for Cato and Glimmer, because she ultimately realized even the Careers were pawns, so idk where anon is getting the notion she only felt for Rue and Peta. The first half of Catching Fire was basically SURVIVOR'S GUILT the book.

It's not that she attempted suicide, it's that she realized they needed a winner, someone to parade around for a year to keep reminding people of the Games and rubbing their faces in their losses while looking like they're rewarding someone. There were probably suicides before, but there weren't suicide attempts when it came down to two players. Also, the "pretty pretty outfits" were awesome in that they were actually branding for the future Mockingjay. Cinna knew what he was doing.

I also don't know where you're getting that she doesn't have any empathy. She's definitely selfish, I don't deny, but she doesn't lack empathy. I also don't know where others were excusing her for anything. She had been through trauma and a lot of people gave her space?

If anyone else had attempted suicide (in a cleverly-designed-to-fail way) first, they'd be the protagonist and not her? There always has to be a first.

She...had empathy though? The very premise of the Games though is that you COULDN'T let that empathy get in the way of keeping yourself alive, and she HAD to stay alive. Nobody in that arena wanted to kill anyone (except maybe the Careers) but in order to survive, they had to. That doesn't mean she had no empathy. It means she didn't die right off the bat.

Hell, she spent most of the Games avoiding other people so she DIDN'T have to kill as many or see as much of the awful violence, so if anything she's MORE empathetic than she should have been.

My guess is another butthurt Cato/Clove stan, upset that the actual sociopaths with no empathy whatsoever for any other tributes including their own group weren't the ones to win the Games.
