Tumblr and fic

(Anonymous) 2014-11-04 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
There's an attitude that, in general, Tumblr is a really bad place for fic. But I had an experience lately that makes me wonder.

Not long ago, I wrote a fic that deals with some rather uncomfortable themes. I posted it to Ttumblr, AO3, and FFN. Now, I have other fics in the same fandom on AO3 and FFN, and they've been well-received -- but they've also been straight-up shippy fics, whereas this latest was more of a character study. And this latest was not well-received at all on the archives, whereas the response on Tumblr has been very positive (and not just from my followers, but from denizens of the fandom in general).

Now, maybe the fic in question isn't actually very good. Maybe Tumblr is just an echo-chamber into which I've shouted. But I find it odd that the space that is supposed to be the least friendly toward fic and the most prone to mindless squee is the one where I've found an audience in this case.

What are your experiences with Tumblr and fic, and/or writing in general? Do you find that the characterization of it being unfriendly toward fic holds, or do you find the opposite?

Good job, self.

Tumblr is the worst place to look for fic, because of the lack of a decent search engine and the eye-searingly bad styles some people use for their tumblr. It's fine for posting fic, because reblogging is a really good way to get something promoted, because the followers of that person have no way to avoid seeing it.

My problem with Tumblr is the layout; that, for me, is what's most offputting about Tumblr fic. The other thing is that it's difficult to archive, or to find, and it's therefore more trouble than it's worth to try and find fic. That's my two cents on why I don't go there to search for fic.

Agreed on the layout thing, but if a blog is generally set up for fic I've found the owner tends to (not always, but often, possibly because they have a hard time reading otherwise) use a theme or layout that makes it easier on the eyes. Or at least uses columns that are wide enough to accommodate more than three words per line.

If someone posts a lot of fic it might be worth suggesting a new theme?

thirding what everyone above has said

i'd love to find more fic on tumblr (especially for rare pairings where there's only like 6 fics on AO3 or FFN) but i find it very hard to find.
i mean, there's pairing tags, but you often have to scroll through a lot of irrelevant stuff to get to the fic. and if your pairing doesn't have a tag, well.

Hell, pairing tags themselves aren't always helpful. My fandom uses numbers to denote pairings and those get lost in a sea of posts about a variety of series episode posts.

Nah, Gundam Wing. And not everybody uses the format that would make searching easier. For example, not everyone uses 1x3x1, some use 1x3 and 3x1. Which makes it hard to search for stuff easily.

I don't post fic directly to Tumblr. I just post my stuff on AO3 and then post links to the fics on Tumblr.

They tend to get lost when they're for big fandoms, but for itty bitty ones I've gotten a handful of likes/reblogs. Somehow I doubt that ~5 notes counts as "well-received" to everyone, but that's about as many comments as my fics usually got on LJ, so I'm pretty content.
