B-b-but what if the art isn't actually good and doesn't deserve to be praised

(Boy, did my parents do a number on me)

"Encourage" is different from "praise". I don't see anything wrong with encouraging someone to keep doing something that makes them happy even if they're not good at it. But it seems like a lot of people disagree with me there. Trying and failing is treated as worse than not trying at all.

To be clear, that's not what I think is right, it's more what my parents' attitude was, and to some extent the instinct that I've inherited from them. Rationally, I think you're pretty much on point.

I'm actually against false praise too, but I agree with anon below that hard work still deserves to be praised even when it doesn't work out the way it was supposed to.

This is why you praise children for the work and effort they put in, not necessarily for the end result. (Though frankly, everyone should realize that "looks great" and "looks great for a five year old" are different things.) Hard work deserves praise even if the end result isn't the greatest. You WANT kids (and the grown ups they later become) to work hard and do the best they can.

Why are you fake stuttering in type?

Also, praise the effort, if not the art.

Yeah, I didn't get my point across at all, which was to praise the attitude described in the OP image in comparison to the attitude espoused by my parents.

Sorry. Tried to be too clever with it.

It was pretty obvious to anyone paying attention anon, don't fret.
